No More Waiting - Macra Urges Budget 2026 Action on Succession and Generational Renewal

Macra welcomes recent comments by the Tánaiste Simon Harris that more needs to be done on succession as part of Budget 2026. At the recent Tullamore Show, the Tánaiste spoke with Macra representatives and also indicated that he would expect the upcoming budget to show movement in the area of generational renewal and succession.
Macra National President Josephine O'Neill welcomed the comments by the Tánaiste and reiterated her comments that “generational renewal must become a key issue for our government, to ensure a future for our young farmers and for rural Ireland. Our government must now show that this was not just a political promise but a meaningful exercise”.

Macra has lobbied for the introduction of a Succession Scheme, among other measures in this budget, to help address the generational renewal crisis in farming. The Macra President said “the Government needs to be ambitious in its support for succession and generational renewal in this year’s budget allocation to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the very point Macra outlined at a recent meeting with the Minister for Agriculture, Martin Heydon. We cannot wait until the next CAP. We have waited long enough; we need to start committing resources now and start making progress before it’s too late”.
Macra has also repeated its call for the Commission on Generational Renewal to publish its findings.
